Did you know North Carolina has consistently ranked in the top 10 states in the country for having a human trafficking problem? Both children and adults, male and female are sold for sex or labor for the benefit of another. Trafficking occurs in hotels, homes, truck stops, and massage parlors. Because of the psychological manipulation that occurs, most victims don’t identify as victims and will not seek help. The average age of sex trafficking victims is between 12 and 14 years of age.
This was a harsh truth for our team to learn about, so we’ve partnered with Shield North Carolina, a truly amazing and local non-profit that is trying to change the landscape by promoting focused prevention initiatives, directing policy, and supporting restoration services.
Let’s start educating ourselves, have a more open dialogue, and open our minds to a world without human trafficking.
Learn More About Shield North Carolina
Shield North Carolina works to end human trafficking in the state by promoting focused prevention initiatives, directing policy, and supporting restoration services. Towards these ends, they are developing a prototype for municipal governments to implement, establishing a faith-based coalition and providing outreach to community groups such as schools, hospitals, the corrections system, transportation systems, and potential buyers. In collaboration with state agencies, they plan to replicate this model across the state so that North Carolina can emerge as a leader in the anti-human trafficking fight and become a prototype for other states. In addition, they are advocating for federal legislation that would ensure greater restitution for child pornography victims and an executive order that would put forth more federal resources for internet crimes against children.
