So you think if you wear makeup with SPF you don’t have to apply sunscreen? Think again! If this video we made tells you anything, it’s that makeup alone is not enough.

Don’t get us wrong, we love makeup, and the little amount of SPF it may contain does provide a slight protective layer on your skin. But, typically, the SPF ingredients in makeup—whether foundation, moisturizer, or powder—aren’t strong enough to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays all on their own.
That’s why, even if you do wear makeup with SPF in it, you should also apply sunscreen—especially if you are going to be out in the sun for an extended period of time (make sure to reapply throughout the day too!). We recommend applying a broad spectrum SPF first, then makeup over top for best protection!
Generally, SPF 30 or higher is best for the most thorough sun protection. And don’t worry, you can still get a tan even if you’re wearing sunscreen!
Protect Yourself
EltaMD® is one of our favorite SPFs. We carry a range of their products that provide great UVA/UVB protection—plus some other benefits as well! Here are some of our favorites.
EltaMD® UV Clear Broad Spectrum – SPF 46
This oil-free SPF is perfect for wearing with makeup. Additionally, it contains ingredients that help promote the appearance of healthy-looking skin, as well as calm and protect sensitive skin types prone to breakouts, rosacea, and discoloration.
Athletic types, this one’s for you! This sunscreen is great for swimmers, skiers, runners, golfers, and other athletes—or for those who just love to be outdoors. Bonus: UV Sport is water-resistant, so it won’t rinse off in water or drip into your eyes and sting when you sweat!
The best sheer everyday facial sunscreen, this product combines serious UV protection and superior hydration—not to mention hyaluronic acid!—which altogether helps boost moisture retention and diminish fine lines.
