When was the last time you checked the expiration date on your makeup or skin care products? Just like medications, you need to keep an eye on the date once they are open. We have put together a guide with a few common product expiration dates and will continue to update throughout the year. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at 919-307-8033 or Hello@AzuraSkin.com.
EltaMD®
All sunscreens have an expiration date. The FDA says that you can use any sunscreen one year past the expiration date but you cannot sell it past the expiration date. Once a product is opened it is good one year past the expiration date unless it has been exposed to extreme heat. If it has been, we recommend not using it past the expiration date.
ZO® Skin Health
Most of the ZO® products have around a two-year shelf life. There is an icon on the packaging and bottle to show how long a product is good for once it’s open. It looks like a little jar and has the number of months on it. Most of them are good for at least 12 months after opening.
Mascara
Mascaras may last up to two years if they are unopened, however, it is best to replace your mascara every two to three months after opening. Mascara has the shortest shelf life of any beauty product.
Eyeliner
Liquid eyeliner is a lot like mascara and should be replaced every three to six months. Eyeliner pencils, however, should last up to two years.
Lipstick
Lipstick is typically safe to use for one year after opening.
ChapStick
Normally you will use all your ChapStick before it expires but if you have not used it in three years, you should throw it out. If the lip balm looks funny or smells bad, it is possible that bacteria or fungus could have grown on it so throw it out.
Foundation & Concealer
Once opened, foundation and concealer should be good to use for one year.
Eye Cream
Most eye creams last one year after opening.
Makeup Sponge
How long have you had your makeup sponge? If it has been past a month, it is time to throw it out.
Loofah
Opt for a new loofah after three months of use.
Deodorant
If you have not finished your deodorant after one year, you need to toss it.
Hairbrush
Start shopping for a new hairbrush after one year.
Hair Spray
Hair sprays should work fine for two to three years.
Perfume
After one to two years, you should purchase new perfume.
Medication
The expiration date of a drug is estimated using stability testing under good manufacturing practices as determined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Drug products marketed in the US typically have an expiration date that extends from 12 to 60 months from the time of manufacturer. Learn more at Drugs.com.
