As we head back into chemical peel season (!), we’d like to share with you some tips on choosing a chemical peel, plus, post-peel care. It’s important to know that not all chemical peels are the same, and you should choose one accordingly based on your skin type. Let’s dive in!
What Is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel is a solution that’s applied to the skin, which causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off. Chemical peels are used to improve the appearance of the skin by making it smoother, brighter, and show less fine lines and wrinkles. They’re commonly used on the face, neck, chest, and hands.
What Kind of Chemical Peel Should I Get?
At Azura, we offer several kinds of chemical peels, but the best one for you will vary based on your skin type!
If you have oily skin, large pores, constant and severe breakouts, and stubborn post-breakout marks, your best option is a salicylic acid peel, which can penetrate through oil and into the pore lining.
If you have enlarged pores, blackheads, occasional mild breakouts, and tight and/or irritated skin, your best bet is a combination peel of salicylic, lactic, and glycolic acids. Fun fact: Lactic and glycolic acids are water-soluble!
If you experience redness and sensitivity, go for a lactic acid peel, which is more gentle on the skin.
If you have a “normal” skin type (oily in the summer and dry in the winter), we recommend a combination of malic, tartaric, lactic, glycolic, and/or mandelic acids.

How Often Should I Get a Chemical Peel?
We typically suggest getting a chemical peel every six weeks or so, but, of course, that also depends on your skin type! If you have sensitive skin, you won’t want to get a chemical peel as often.
Post-Peel Care
After a chemical peel, your skin will look pink, flushed, and shiny—but don’t worry, that’s completely normal, and it should only last about three to six days! Your skin may become flaky as well, but that’s also pretty common.
After getting a chemical peel, your skin will be super sensitive, so make sure to wear sunscreen and be extra gentle when touching or rubbing it.
